A Separate Payment, Not a Percentage
The rating schedule assigns erectile dysfunction (DC 7522) a 0% rating and flags it for special monthly compensation. Loss of use of a creative organ qualifies for SMC-K:
- $139.87 a month in 2026 (about $1,678.44 a year)
- Paid on top of your regular compensation, even at 100%
- It doesn’t change your combined rating percentage
Check the SMC-K box in our VA disability calculator to see your total.
It’s Usually Connected Through Something Else
Most ED claims are secondary to a service-connected condition or its treatment:
- Antidepressants and other medications for PTSD, depression or anxiety
- High blood pressure and some of its medications
- Diabetes and prostate cancer treatment, both presumptive for Agent Orange exposure
- Spine conditions with nerve involvement, and TBI
A medical opinion naming the cause, for example a specific medication and its known side effects, is usually what wins the claim.
The Same Benefit for Women Veterans
Female sexual arousal disorder (DC 7632) is also rated 0% and reviewed for SMC-K, so women veterans with a service-connected condition, including one caused by medications or another service-connected condition, may qualify for the same monthly payment.
Erectile Dysfunction & SMC-K: Common Questions
Is it worth claiming something rated 0%?
Yes. ED qualifies for SMC-K, worth $139.87 a month in 2026, paid in addition to your regular compensation.
I’m already at 100%. Can I still get SMC-K?
Yes. SMC-K is paid on top of compensation at any rating, including 100%.
Do I need a urologist?
Not necessarily. A diagnosis from your regular provider can work. The most important piece is a medical opinion linking ED to service or a service-connected condition.
Is there a limit on SMC-K?
SMC-K is generally paid once per qualifying loss of use, and there are limits on combining multiple SMC-K awards with other compensation.
