Navigating the VA From Bismarck

Bismarck-area veterans are part of the Fargo VA Health Care System, with a VA clinic in town.

Health care

Bismarck VA Clinic

The Bismarck VA Clinic, part of the Fargo VA Health Care System, provides outpatient care locally. Treatment records from the clinic are important evidence for your claim, so make sure your symptoms are documented at every visit.

C&P exams

Exams Closer to Home

C&P exams may be scheduled with a VA-contracted examiner in the Bismarck area, at a VA facility, or by telehealth for some conditions. If an exam is a long drive, contact the scheduler early. Missing an exam usually means the VA decides without it.

Guard & Reserve

North Dakota National Guard

Bismarck is home to a large North Dakota National Guard community. Guard and Reserve claims follow special rules, and service connection usually depends on what happened during qualifying duty, so the right orders and line-of-duty paperwork are key.

Free options

Burleigh & Morton County Veterans Service Officers

Burleigh, Morton and every other North Dakota county have Veterans Service Officers who help veterans file at no cost, and Tribal Veterans Service Officers serve tribal nations. We’ll tell you honestly if that’s the better fit.

Rating Increases

How to Increase Your VA Disability Rating

Many Bismarck-area veterans were rated years ago and never revisited it. There are four common paths to a higher combined rating:

1. File for an increase on a worsened condition

If symptoms are worse than your current rating describes, file for an increase with recent medical evidence. The VA rates on current severity, so recent treatment records and a clear description of flare-ups matter.

2. Claim secondary conditions

A service-connected condition can cause others: sleep apnea or depression secondary to PTSD, radiculopathy secondary to a back injury, knee or hip problems from an altered gait. Each can be rated separately.

3. Look for conditions you never claimed, and TDIU

Tinnitus, PACT Act presumptives and old injuries are commonly missed. If service-connected conditions keep you from holding steady work, Individual Unemployability (TDIU) can pay at the 100% rate.

4. Respond fast if the VA proposes a reduction

If you get a notice that the VA plans to reduce your rating, you generally have 60 days to send evidence, and requesting a hearing within 30 days keeps your payments unchanged until it's held.

FAQ

Bismarck VA Disability Questions

Is there a VA clinic in Bismarck?

Yes. The Bismarck VA Clinic is part of the Fargo VA Health Care System and provides outpatient care locally.

Do I have to drive to Fargo for a C&P exam?

Not always. Exams are often assigned to VA-contracted examiners closer to home, and some conditions can be examined by telehealth. Your exam notice lists the location; contact the scheduler right away if it isn’t workable.

I’m in the North Dakota National Guard. Can I file a VA claim?

Often, yes. Guard members can be eligible based on federal active duty, or on injuries and some illnesses from qualifying training duty. Your orders and line-of-duty documentation are key evidence.

Is there free VA claim help in Bismarck?

Yes. Burleigh and Morton counties have Veterans Service Officers, and accredited VSOs like the American Legion, DAV and VFW help veterans file at no cost.

Are you affiliated with the VA?

No. We are a private company and are not affiliated with or endorsed by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Fargo VA Health Care System, or any government agency.
