Navigating the VA From Grand Forks

Grand Forks veterans are part of the Fargo VA Health Care System, with a VA clinic in town and another in Grafton.

Health care

Grand Forks & Grafton VA Clinics

The Grand Forks VA Clinic and the Grafton VA Clinic, both part of the Fargo VA Health Care System, provide outpatient care locally, with the Fargo VA Medical Center about 75 miles south.

Separating soon?

Grand Forks Air Force Base

Airmen leaving Grand Forks AFB can file through the Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) program 180 to 90 days before separation, which can mean a decision shortly after you get out. Flight-line noise exposure is common, so don’t overlook tinnitus and hearing loss.

Student veterans

University of North Dakota

GI Bill education benefits and VA disability compensation are separate, so UND student veterans can receive both. If you’re in school and never filed for conditions from service, filing within a year of discharge can protect an earlier effective date.

Rating Increases

How to Increase Your VA Disability Rating

Many Grand Forks-area veterans were rated years ago and never revisited it. There are four common paths to a higher combined rating:

1. File for an increase on a worsened condition

If symptoms are worse than your current rating describes, file for an increase with recent medical evidence. The VA rates on current severity, so recent treatment records and a clear description of flare-ups matter.

2. Claim secondary conditions

A service-connected condition can cause others: sleep apnea or depression secondary to PTSD, radiculopathy secondary to a back injury, knee or hip problems from an altered gait. Each can be rated separately.

3. Look for conditions you never claimed, and TDIU

Tinnitus, PACT Act presumptives and old injuries are commonly missed. If service-connected conditions keep you from holding steady work, Individual Unemployability (TDIU) can pay at the 100% rate.

4. Respond fast if the VA proposes a reduction

If you get a notice that the VA plans to reduce your rating, you generally have 60 days to send evidence, and requesting a hearing within 30 days keeps your payments unchanged until it's held.
