Navigating the VA From Minot

Minot veterans are part of the Fargo VA Health Care System, with a VA clinic in town.

Health care

Minot VA Clinic

The Minot VA Clinic, part of the Fargo VA Health Care System, provides outpatient care locally. Treatment records from the clinic are some of the most important evidence in any claim.

Separating soon?

Minot Air Force Base

Airmen leaving Minot AFB can file through the Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) program 180 to 90 days before separation. Flight-line and maintenance noise is common, so tinnitus and hearing loss shouldn’t be overlooked.

C&P exams

Exams Without the Trip to Fargo

C&P exams may be scheduled with a VA-contracted examiner in the Minot area, at a VA facility, or by telehealth for some conditions. If an exam location is a long drive, contact the scheduler early.

Ward County and every other North Dakota county have Veterans Service Officers who help veterans file at no cost, and Tribal Veterans Service Officers serve tribal nations. We’ll tell you honestly if that’s the better fit.

Rating Increases

How to Increase Your VA Disability Rating

Many Minot-area veterans were rated years ago and never revisited it. There are four common paths to a higher combined rating:

1. File for an increase on a worsened condition

If symptoms are worse than your current rating describes, file for an increase with recent medical evidence. The VA rates on current severity, so recent treatment records and a clear description of flare-ups matter.

2. Claim secondary conditions

A service-connected condition can cause others: sleep apnea or depression secondary to PTSD, radiculopathy secondary to a back injury, knee or hip problems from an altered gait. Each can be rated separately.

3. Look for conditions you never claimed, and TDIU

Tinnitus, PACT Act presumptives and old injuries are commonly missed. If service-connected conditions keep you from holding steady work, Individual Unemployability (TDIU) can pay at the 100% rate.

4. Respond fast if the VA proposes a reduction

If you get a notice that the VA plans to reduce your rating, you generally have 60 days to send evidence, and requesting a hearing within 30 days keeps your payments unchanged until it's held.
